Align With Bigger Picture Objectives

We’ve all had those days, and I wanted to share a bit of my usual mind framework to try and overcome this. Even though it always depends a lot on the environment too, these are things you could be doing! I am proof that it usually works from many different product-management and technology setups to MBA different challenges—at least on what you can control!

  1. Do you know the bigger picture objectives or #OKRs of your organization and how your job contributes to that? If yes and they make sense, always check if what you’re doing is aligned with that and know how to measure that. If not, question your leaders and understand what their expectations are from you, and then always check again if you’re focusing on the right inputs.
  1. Are you doing things that could increase revenues, cut costs, or create general improvements in your routine or your teams’? If not, could you?
  1. Are you creating time to review things and correct bugs or inconsistencies and reflect on mistakes and lessons learned and feedback received (retrospective style)?
  1. What are your personal goals with your job besides that? Do you aim for a promotion? Or to create connections? Or to change areas? Whatever that goal is, make sure you also make time to prioritize that.

If you spend some—or worse, most—of your time on things besides these or that you can’t connect to this, you should 100% reassess and understand if that’s where your lack of motivation comes from! Most times it’s about aligning all of these and, of course, surrounding yourself with the best people and corporate culture you can!

If you can’t control it, dare to do something different and consider what you should change in your routine to make sure your time and—even more important if you’re a leader—your teams’ is being well spent!

And one last but very important thing: iterate this constantly! Especially if you’re in a fast-paced environment, what worked yesterday might not work today, and the faster you question the assumptions and reassess these, the faster you and your teams will be delivering meaningful and fulfilling results. And of course, try and choose a place where you can have fun and enjoy yourself with whoever you’re doing it with!

Create a Supportive Community

I interview countless young entrepreneurs to understand their real stories—the highs and the lows. One common theme of motivation is finding others around you who can relate to your passion. You are constantly energized if you create a community of like-minded individuals who will support you through your losses while celebrating your wins.

Popular communities mentioned include Z Fellows and Y Combinator programs.

Stay Connected to Your Vision

Staying motivated is about staying connected to your vision and your “why,” which inspired you to start in the first place. Staying motivated is also about staying connected to the life made possible through entrepreneurship or your chosen profession. Every day, remind yourself what you are growing toward, why you’re doing it, and the life you wish to create for yourself. Accept that it takes consistent action compounded over a period of time.

As an entrepreneur, you are embarking on a vision that most likely only you can see. As a young professional, you benefit from becoming your best self.

Your vision will guide you along your path, and it will also yield the benefits you wish to have in your life. Some of the support to offer yourself along the journey is motivational podcasts, videos, reading, and supportive people around you.

It is also important to eliminate distractions, which could be technology or people. Unhealthy or non-beneficial distractions will reduce motivation.

Lastly, think of money and time as energy and the world around you as various opportunities to invest your energy. From this perspective, you can look for the ROI of where your attention and energy flow.

The cost of success as an entrepreneur is dedication, consistency, emotional intelligence, and patience. Cultivate these core attributes, and you are guaranteed to succeed. Yet, keep in mind (an open mind) that your success might not look the way you thought it should.

Use Paid Clients for Motivation

As an entrepreneur, having paid clients will motivate you. However, you need to give yourself time and stay true to the “end game.”

For example, if your end game is to possibly transition from your current job to your own business, start offering part-time services to one or two paying clients (while keeping your job). Using motivation from getting paid, you can then build a business plan to increase your paying clients over time.

Similarly, as a young professional, motivation will come from recognition for your work, so work smart. That means asking questions to clarify what you are asked to do. Once you know exactly what you have to do, nail it and keep records of your completed work for your future reference.

Discipline Over Motivation

Staying motivated is not easy. Generally, we always get advice to keep focused on why you have started. But staying disciplined is the most important part of staying motivated. Discipline is the bridge between goals and achievement. Here, you do not find motivation from outside, but you build habits that turn your dreams into reality. This self-discipline fosters a sense of accomplishment and development, which increases motivation.

Celebrate Your Accomplishments

Do not look at what has not happened yet. Instead, look at what you have accomplished so far. Look at how you are helping those people who have come to you for assistance. Get testimonies from them. Add the testimonies to your website, emails, and marketing materials. All of this builds credibility and will keep you motivated to do what is right, because it is right…and then do it right!

Align Career With Strengths

Before you start your new venture or career, do the legwork and deep introspection to make sure that it is aligned with your strengths, values, and passions. Pay attention to what you feel truly drawn towards vs. what you’re intellectually interested in. Intellectual interest won’t be enough to power your career. It is much easier to stay motivated when you’re in the right space, and the work comes easily to you and naturally re-energizes you.

Plan for Celebrations

Aspiring entrepreneurs and young professionals share the fact that a (lengthy) professional journey awaits them. I submit that a professional journey of any length will be met with challenges ranging from errors to failures. Among them will be myriad opportunities to hear the word, “No.” Staying motivated in this environment over time can be a challenge at times as well.

One piece of advice I offer is to set, plan for, and follow through on as many reasons to celebrate as possible. Consider using “Metrics that Matter,” i.e., responsibilities and goals that align with what you enjoy and find satisfaction in and that impact the business positively. Plan to celebrate the big win that will take months to reach as well as each successful contact and step along the way. Keep getting better and moving forward.

Set Milestones for Success

Your journey is not a sprint; it will be a marathon. Once you set your ultimate goal, you need milestones along the way. Achieving each milestone along the road will give you a measure of success. These small wins will propel you to the next, and each small step will get you closer to your goal.

Focus on Proactive Actions

As an entrepreneur, you will be bombarded with information, expectations, and deadlines more often than you want. Staying motivated is so challenging when there are many distractions around. There will be a list of things for you to do and never enough time.

Let’s think like a video game and level up repeatedly by being proactive, knowing the secret moves to move through obstacles. Choose to focus on what needs to be done and set yourself up for success.

Create a toolbox of thoughts that helps you manage your energy and happiness, and plan your activities by interest and ease. Create a system of information: right now, to be done soon, needs to be in the calendar, or go in the parking lot for later.

Understand what you need for self-care and make sure you schedule it in. If you miss it consistently, you will be overwhelmed by your emotional inability. Procrastination and avoidance are the barriers to setting intention to action.

It takes a mindset of possibilities to set up a plan with purpose for the journey or potential. Healthy Brains Make Positive Gains. Check in on your brain. Is it supporting your future or clinging to the past?

Commit to Consistency

Just show up. As an entrepreneur or young professional, the key to success often lies in your commitment to consistently putting in the effort. Even on days when it feels tiring or frustrating, maintaining your presence and persistence can lead to valuable opportunities.

Establish a proactive mindset from the beginning—start taking action, and embrace the journey, even if it doesn’t go as planned. Every experience, whether successful or not, provides invaluable lessons and insights. By consistently showing up and persevering, you’ll discover what works for you, refine your strategies, and grow through the process. Your dedication will not only help you navigate challenges but also pave your path for future success.

Learn From Failures

Embrace a learn-from-failure mindset. As entrepreneurs, we often believe that we need to get everything right and can’t afford, in the eyes of funders and staff, to make mistakes. But failure provides us a blueprint for long-term success. It helps us build true learning organizations that are constantly improving, innovating, and experimenting. There is great power in failing fast, failing forward, and understanding how not to replicate past setbacks. Failure can and should be the ideal motivator, inspiring us to do more and push harder.

Patrick Riccards, CEO, Driving Force Institute

Surround Yourself With Diverse People

I would challenge any aspiring entrepreneur or young professional who is trying to stay motivated to surround themselves with individuals that are “unlike” them. Seeking out people outside of their industry that will challenge them in different ways—their perspective, their voice, their reasoning, their “why.” Those that are unlike you will push you outside of your comfort zone and may impose uneasiness which, in turn, creates motivation and the willingness to be different.

Recognize Stages of Entrepreneurship

Motivation is a fickle friend for entrepreneurs. It’s the high you chase, the fuel that drives you forward. But like any high, it fades. I’ve felt the exhilarating rush of a new idea, only to hit a wall weeks later.

Entrepreneurship is a journey with distinct stages: dreaming, taking action, facing challenges, building momentum, and achieving success. Recognizing which stage you’re in can help you understand why you might be feeling unmotivated. Every stage is part of the process, but the secret is consistency, not constant euphoria.

Break down your goals into tiny steps. Celebrate each one, no matter how small. It’s like training for a marathon; you need rest days to rebuild. Let your mind wander, recharge, and return with a fresh perspective. Each setback is a setup for a comeback. Keep showing up, even when the spark dims. That’s where real growth happens.

Persevere Through Failures

Failure is success in the making! When the disappointment waves fade, listen to the learning and persevere with the wisdom you’ve gained.

Danielle Tarantola, Director, Yoga Foundation

Surround Yourself With Talented People

Aspiring entrepreneurs and young professionals should surround themselves with good people. Talented, like-minded people challenge your thinking but are supportive of shared goals and projects. As you are standing up a business idea or starting a new job, identifying people who will be honest and offer constructive criticism is crucial. These are the people who can help grow your business and make your work-life interesting and impactful.

Rely on Intrinsic Motivation

Do not seek motivation from external sources. Focus on developing practices to allow you to rely on internal factors for motivation. Intrinsic motivation should be the only type of motivation you rely upon. The days you find yourself without motivation? Those are the days to lean into the processes to keep you on track. The days you are full of motivation? Those are the days to make sure you have processes in place to catch you when you fall.

None of this is to say you should not celebrate wins. Celebration is important. Otherwise, you will pursue the emotionally exhausting path of pursuing the ever-moving goal post, which you will never reach. Set your objectives. When you hit them, celebrate. Use this as fuel.

When you fail to hit an objective, do not allow it to crush you. Instead, study it. What assumptions did you make? Which were correct? Which were incorrect? What habits were present in your life that inhibited you from hitting your objective?

Whenever performing these audits on yourself, remember to never judge yourself. Judge only the behavior. This helps you develop impartiality. A clear mind and a thriving business can be yours, as long as you continue to find peace within yourself and work to keep the business aligned with your vision.

Stay Curious and Passionate

Stay curious and hungry for growth. The journey of an entrepreneur is full of challenges, but it’s the passion for what you love that will keep you going. Surround yourself with creative energy—people, places, and experiences that inspire you to push boundaries. Remember, success is not just about the destination but the stories you create along the way. Keep innovating, keep believing in your vision, and never lose sight of why you started.

Katrina Olson-Mottahed, Entrepreneur, Kollectif Creative Inc

Remember Your Why

My piece of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs or young professionals is to get clear about why it is you’re doing what you’re doing.

Tough times will come, and it is during those times you need to remember your why so you can cling to that when all the odds are stacked against you.

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint-of-heart. You will be tested like you never have been before, but if you have a strong enough “why,” you will get through it.

Jacob Krum, Owner, Remote Ops Solutions

Create a Daily Ritual

Create a daily embodiment ritual and mission statement that operates as your home base. It can be a combination of your strengths and values and your why, so you always remember who you are, what you’re doing, and why you love it. When you say it out loud and affirm it to yourself, do it with your hands on your heart and your eyes closed so you can feel it with your whole body. And then imagine it rippling out into the world. This way, you always remember why you’re doing what you’re doing, and you can keep momentum on days when things don’t go according to plan.

Stay Hungry and Serve Others

Our brand would tell young aspiring entrepreneurs to always stay hungry and go after what their heart desires! The heart is the most powerful organ in the human body, and when you truly believe you can achieve what you desire as an entrepreneur, you already have half the battle won!

Also, when trying to grow your business as a young entrepreneur, speak to serve others; do not speak to sell to others. People can tell whether they are just a “business transaction” to you, or you truly care about them as a valued person/client you are doing or trying to do business with. When people feel in their heart you are truly trying to help them grow, they will work with you all day long!

Young aspiring entrepreneurs, please also remember this: entrepreneurship is truly about building trust with the people you are doing business with. You build trust through being competent at what you do, always being reliable and showing up when you say you will show up, and having your clients’ (and all you come into contact with) best interests at heart. When people trust you, you will do very well as an entrepreneur!

Incorporate Meditation and Manifestation

My ability to grow my success was frustrating until I understood that working too hard for too long curbs growth and enthusiasm. But that changed when I learned how to literally breathe success into my life with meditation and manifestation.

Although it took a while—because I was a workaholic. But since then, and over the last 17 years, the ability to stay motivated and propel forward comes from the fact that my coaching has produced miracles for my clients who get million-dollar-plus results in as little as 4 weeks.

However, none of the trainings I attended conveniently overlooked this crucial piece of information, and that is that other people can manifest things into your reality. My advice for entrepreneurs to stay motivated is to learn the skill of becoming a quantum co-creator. When you can guarantee your own success, it’s easy to fire up your imagination.

Patricia Aaren, Hypnotherapist & Manifestation Coach, Vivid Realities

Identify What Matters to You

Figure out the things that really matter to you. What lights you up? What work would excite or fulfill you each day? What makes the hard work worth it? What has motivated you forward in the past?

As someone who is self-employed, I’m responsible for every aspect of my business. I don’t enjoy all of it, but my reason for doing the work helps me push past my hesitation or procrastination. It took me a while to really figure out what I wanted versus what the people around me wanted for me. Once I got clear on that, things started to click. I approached my work (even the hard stuff) through the lens of “but this will get me closer to helping people.”

Don’t underestimate the power of community! Having other people in your circle can make a huge difference. They can help motivate you even when that motivation feels non-existent for yourself.

Keep the Fire Burning

As Winston Churchill’s words remind us, the key to long-lasting success isn’t in avoiding failure but in maintaining the courage to keep going. For aspiring entrepreneurs and young professionals, the road ahead will be filled with challenges, but armed with the right mindset and motivation, no obstacle is insurmountable. The tips shared in this article are not just tools for the present—they are lifelong practices that can help you stay resilient and focused, no matter what stage you’re at in your journey.

Remember, motivation isn’t about feeling inspired every single day; it’s about cultivating habits and perspectives that keep your passion alive. Whether it’s celebrating small wins, surrounding yourself with supportive people, or continuously learning, these strategies will serve as the fuel for your success. Keep your vision clear, your drive strong, and your resilience unshaken. Your journey may be tough, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

In the end, success isn’t defined by the smoothness of the path but by your perseverance through the bumps along the way. Keep pushing forward, and let your motivation be the guiding light that carries you to new heights.
